What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the use of medication to help patients relax during dental procedures such as a root canal, tooth extraction, or dental implant.
Sedation and anti-anxiety techniques can be used for any type of dental procedure. The use of these techniques also depends on the needs of the patient.

At Salt Lake Family Dental, we use sedation dentistry as a way to help patients overcome their fears and phobias so that they can receive the dental care they require without unnecessary discomfort.

The Levels of Sedation

Minimal sedation(also known as conscious sedation): The patient may slur their words and not remember much or any of the procedure. For the majority of patients, this is sufficient to perform necessary dental procedures and is considered to be the safest method of sedation.
Deep sedation: The patient is put into a state where they are on the edge of consciousness but can still be easily woken up.
General anesthesia: The patient is completely unconscious.

Types of Dental Sedation

At our office near, we commonly use one of the following two sedation techniques during dental procedures:

Nitrous Oxide/ Laughing Gas

Nitrous Oxide is the most common form of sedation in the dental office. It is a safe technique that does not put you to sleep, but rather keeps you in a relaxed state and reduces your anxiety about a dental procedure. The gas is administered through a mask that the patient will be asked to inhale from before the procedure.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation can range from minimal to moderate sedation levels depending on the dosage. At Salt Lake Family Dental we find that minimal sedation is the fit for the majority of patients and is safe. The medication prescribed by we will be administered at the office and will make the patient feel groggy, tend to slur their words and a high majority of the time patient will remember nothing from the procedure. Many patients fall asleep under minimal sedation but can be easily woken up with a gentle shake.

For many patients, both of these sedation techniques are safe and commonly practiced in dental offices. While a patient is under any type of sedation, vitals will be constantly monitored throughout their dental procedure to ensure their health and comfort.
